The coronavirus pandemic has slowed local auto racing to a crawl, but Saturday night at the Can-Am Speedway, the 2021 local season opened up in high gear and Stewart Friesen won the featured 100-lap, main event for the Super DIRTcar Series big-block modifieds.

It had been 518 days since the DIRT modified tour ran a point-paying event, but the Can-Am Speedway in LaFargeville provided all the ingredients to kick-start Upstate New York racing into top speed.

It started with a picture-perfect spring day and 48 big-blocks mods in the pits, along with 56 sportsman and 21 pro stocks. Can-An owner Tyler Bartlett provided a smooth, fast racing surface, and North Country racing fans turned out in great numbers for the opener.

Friesen has been a dominant force in modified racing with his potent Halmar Racing machine, and he started fourth in Saturday’s 100 lapper. After falling back to sixth in the early going, Friesen raced back into contention and passed early leader, Tim Fuller, for the top spot on the 75th lap.

Once in the lead, Friesen made no mistakes down the stretch and picked up a $7,500 check for the win. Fuller had to settle for second, with Larry Wight, Billy Decker, Tim Sears Jr., Peter Britten, Matt Sheppard, Mike Mahaney, Justin Haers and Pat Ward making up the rest of the top 10.

Other local finishers included Chuck Hile (13), Max McLaughlin (20), Erick Rudolph (22), Jimmy Phelps (23) and Billy Dunn (24). Both McLaughlin and Rudolph were running with the leaders in the early going before getting knocked out with flat tires.

The 30-lap sportsman feature saw veteran Matt Janczuk just hold off Tyler Corcoran for the win. Mike Fowler was third, with Andrew buff and Chris Mackey following.

Ronnie Silk wins $10,000 for Thompson pavement modified triumph

Ronnie Silk passed Keith Rocco in the closing laps to win Saturday night’s Icebreaker 125 main event for tour-type modifieds at the Thompson (Connecticut) Speedway.

Rocco and Bobby Santos were second and third, respectively.

James McFadden and Carson Macedo win Outlaw sprint events in Indiana

The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Tour had a pair of events this weekend in Indiana. Friday night, Australian James McFadden won $10,000 for his victory at Kokomo Speedway.

Saturday night it was Carson Macedo getting his $10,000 check at the Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Indiana.

The popular WoO sprint tour has upcoming New York state dates at Ransomville Speedway on July 30 and Weedsport Speedway on July 31.

NASCAR washout

Both Friday and Saturday’s NASCAR stock car events at the Martinsville (Virginia) Speedway were rain delayed mid-race and will be completed Sunday starting at noon. Fox Sports 1 will air both races.
