LARAMIE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Downtown Laramie is well-known for their local restaurants and shops with one-of-a-kind merchandise. During the pandemic, loyal customers have helped businesses thrive.
Shops like Atmosphere Mountainworks and The Curiosity Shoppe stayed afloat by adapting to safe and convenient ways for customers to shop. They offered online options, curbside pick-ups and even had delivery available.
“I’m not sure a lot of our locals needed a reason to come in and learn how to camp, but they stepped up and were like ‘No, I need a reason to come in and shop and support our local businesses and buy gift cards for the restaurants that were closed’ and stuff like that so I do think we had a really dedicated local group that wanted to keep downtown supported and feel needed,” said Lindsay Olson, co-owner of Atmosphere.
Olson said the pandemic caused some people to take a chance at shopping locally, since most could not travel to bigger cities for shopping needs. Laramie residents were able to take advantage of small businesses.
“I think moving forward, we had just a lot of push for everybody to shop local, I mean throughout the country, and we definitely saw that at Christmastime; people put on their masks and they came out and shopped and we were so thankful for everybody who was able to make it down during Christmastime and so we kind of hope just to continue to see that throughout the summer,” said Kristen Hedley, Buyer and Director of Operations for the Curiosity Shoppe.
The shops are hopeful that Pokes fans and tourists will be able to check out the downtown scene in the following months. Both Hedley and Olson said moving forward, they are confident in their ability to adapt and broaden their base when push comes to shove.
