Greenwich Pollinator Pathway is installing a mural on East Putnam Avenue to celebrate the power of native pollinator plants to create diverse habitats for our pollinator insects, birds and local wildlife.

Sketch of part of the proposed mural for East Putnam Ave.

The mural will be installed on a 100-foot long wall at the bus stop across from the GHS Cardinal stadium to highlight the importance of pollinator habitat within the community.

This mural will be the first in Greenwich and as a piece of public art.

“It is our hope that it will inspire both community action and encourage residents to plant pollinator habitat in their window boxes, tree wells and throughout the landscaping on their properties,” said Myra Kockenbrink Co-Chair of Greenwich Pollinator Pathway.

The project’s organizers are calling on the community to join this initiative by donating to a crowdfunding campaign or volunteering in the effort.

If the campaign reaches its $17,500 goal by its fundraising deadline of May 21, 2021, the project will receive a matching grant of $7,500 from Sustainable CT’s Community Match Fund, an innovative funding resource for public, community-led sustainability projects.

“We hope this mural will ignite a conversation about the importance of biodiversity within the human landscape,” added Klockenbrink. “Seventy percent of our food supply and arguably all of our natural landscape are dependent on pollination and these pollinating insects provide it.”

On Earth Day 2021 the Greenwich Board of Selectmen adopted a Pollinator Pathway Resolution that commits the Town to installing, protecting and promoting pollinator habitat on Town properties.

This resolution, like the mural, supports the mission of establishing native pollinator-friendly habitats and food sources for bees, birds, butterflies, other pollinating insects and wildlife where people live, work and play.
