LINCOLN (HOI) - Members of the Lincoln community came together to celebrate the start of a new home-building project for local veterans Saturday.
The Central Illinois Veterans Commission held a ground breaking ceremony on South College Street, where the first of several homes will be built.
At the event, members signed wooden boards with special messages and those boards will eventually be used in the construction of the homes.
These homes are completely free to veterans and this location is the first of its kind in Lincoln.
Veterans Commission Chairman, Joe Schaler said it's a big moment for the group as this project was started four years ago.
"It makes your heart just very full for all of this," said Schaler. "To see the blessing, even though we didn't go the direction we thought we would."
Schaler said they are already looking at two other locations in Logan County to continue their project.
The group is on the lookout for volunteers and if you are interested in helping with this project, contact the Central Illinois Veterans Commission at 217-828-9366.
