MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is behind bars after police say he accidentally shot another man to death.
The shooting happened late Monday night at the Highland Meadows apartments in Whitehaven.
Police found the victim unresponsive and lying on the ground with a possible gunshot wound, according to an affidavit.
Officers located Deauntavious Smith, who was giving aid to the victim.

Memphis Fire officials arrived and pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
Smith told police he was in the driver’s seat of his car when the victim, identified as Gary Cheatham, walked around to the driver’s side.
Smith said he handed an AR-15 barrel end first to Cheatham, the affidavit said.
When Cheatham grabbed the gun it went off, striking him in the chest.
Smith admitted to police that he owned the gun.
He was taken to Homicide, where he said he handed the gun to the victim, who accidentally pulled the trigger.
Smith is charged with Reckless Homicide.
