Local distillery returns to spirits after producing hand sanitizer during pandemic - HOI ABC

PEORIA (HOI) --- A local distillery recently returned to its normal practice after taking a year to assist with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chris Ober opened Black Band Distillery in Peoria right before the shutdown.

When it looked like his business might be in jeopardy, Ober began using the equipment to make hand sanitizer.

Over the past year, the distillery produced 30,000 gallons of sanitizer, which Ober says was distributed to hospitals and local businesses.

He adds it wasn't too difficult switching production.

"We used a formulation of ethanol, a vegetable glycerin (and) a denaturing agent to make it taste bad if someone attempted to drink it," Ober said. "Basically, it worked the same way as our spirits do since it is made with ethanol and spirits are made from ethanol."

Ober says the they have since stopped making sanitizer since demand changed, but some supply is still available to donate.

Production is now focused back on producing local, high-quality whiskey, gin and vodka.
