Local activists worry gun thefts from cars will lead to more violence in Memphis - FOX13 Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A dozen guns have been stolen from cars over the last two weeks in unincorporated Shelby County.

Local activists working to end gun violence say this has them worried.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office told FOX13 the gun thefts are the results of 35 reported car break-ins.

Activists said it’s “gut-wrenching” to know more senseless violence could follow with more guns in the community.

SCSO said Tennessee law requires gun owners to keep guns out of sight, locked in the trunk or glove box when someone is not in the car.

One activist told FOX13 the law simply isn’t enough.

Reginald Johnson, with Stop the Violence Let Me Live, said more needs to be done to hold gun owners accountable.

“It really doesn’t make sense,” Johnson said. “If you think gun violence in Memphis is terribly now, just watch.”

Community leaders said this should be a wake up call to lawmakers that current bills involving guns, such as the permitless carry, are not good for Shelby County.

The car break-ins and gun thefts are all under investigation by SCSO.
