San Diego State’s high-scoring offense was checked Sunday afternoon by Nevada, which handed SDSU a 5-3 defeat and its first series loss of the season.

The Aztecs (17-8, 12-6 Mountain West), who came into the weekend tied for third in the nation with 9.1 runs a game, opened the series with a 15-7 victory before falling 10-6 in the back end of Saturday’s doubleheader. SDSU collected nine hits off five Nevada pitchers on Sunday, but the Aztecs were prevented from getting the big inning or mounting a comeback like they have several times already this season.

SDSU remains in first place in the Mountain West by percentage points (.667), although the Aztecs are tied in the loss column with UNLV (14-7, 9-6). They remain the only two teams in the MW with winning conference records. Nevada (10-13, 7-8) and Air Force (7-8, 13-11) are tied for third place.

SDSU center fielder Matt Rudick led the Aztecs in the series, going 8-for-13 with six RBIs. Rudick boosted his season batting average to .431. That’s still second on the team to right fielder Jaden Fein, who is hitting .470 after a 5-for-14 performance in the series.

This week: Saturday-Sunday at Fresno State, 1:30 p.m. (DH)/1:30 p.m.

Toreros update

USD (20-7, 6-3 West Coast Conference) couldn’t dig out of an early deficit Sunday at Loyola Marymount (11-18, 4-8) in a 4-2 loss that cost the Toreros the series and their hold on first place in the WCC. USD lost Friday’s opener 9-5 before evening the series Saturday with a 6-0 win.

The weekend highlight was freshmen Carter Rustad (3-0), who struck out three in five innings, and Ivran Romero, who struck out seven in four innings, combining on USD’s fourth shutout of the season.

The losses dropped USD out of first place. The Toreros trail Gonzaga (19-12, 9-3) and are tied by percentage with USF (13-17, 8-4), which visits Fowler Park this weekend.

This week: Friday-Sunday vs. USF, 6 p.m./4 p.m./1 p.m.

Tritons update

UC San Diego (8-16, 5-7 Big West) defeated UC Irvine 5-2 on Sunday to salvage the final game of their four-game conference series. The first-place Anteaters (19-10, 13-3) dominated the first three games, winning 4-0, 11-1 (7) and 9-3.

In Sunday’s victory, UCSD’s Brandon Weed allowed one hit and one unearned run in the first three innings and the Tritons bullpen allowed only one more run over the next six innings against the Anteaters.

This week: Friday-Sunday vs. UC Santa Barbara, 3 p.m./noon (DH)/1 p.m.

Sea Lions update

Point Loma Nazarene (7-13, 6-9 PacWest) was swept in its four-game series against Concordia, losing Friday at home on 10-2 and 9-8 scores before falling 14-4 and 3-0 in Saturday road doubleheader.

The weekend’s most agonizing moment came in Friday’s nightcap when Concordia rallied for four runs in the final inning for a walkoff win. In the finale, PLNU was shut out for the second time this season. It was the first time in four years the Sea Lions were swept in a four-game series (Dixie State).

This week: Friday at Biola, noon (DH); Saturday vs. Biola, noon (DH).
