MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is behind bars after allegedly using his son’s identity to steal a car from a local dealership.
Memphis police responded to Chuck Hutton Chevrolet on Mt. Moriah Road on Jan. 28.
An employee told MPD that Tony Johnson, 38, and another person were at the dealership to purchase a car.
Johnson reportedly filled out paperwork to “demo” a 2019 Nissan Altima, according to an affidavit.
Johnson was supposed to return the next day to finalize the sale through financing or other means.
According to the affidavit, Johnson used his son’s social security number on the demo paperwork.
The employee called a phone number associated with the social security number after running a credit report.
The son’s mother brought her son to the dealership to verify he was not purchasing a vehicle, the affidavit said.
The mother requested a police report for identity theft.
On February 16, police contacted Johnson, who admitted to taking the vehicle without returning to complete paperwork.
Johnson said the dealership “gave” him the car, the affidavit said.
The vehicle loss is valued at $19,900.
Johnson is charged with Theft of Property and two counts of Identity Theft.
