COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. — At Collierville High School, stepping is more than just an extracurricular activity.

“Stepping is bigger than taking your foot and stomping it and just making noises,” said Mutazz McKinney, Collierville Dragon Steppers coach. “Stepping is also about the aspect of true brotherhood and true sisterhood.”

For some of the ladies on the team, that sisterhood was instilled in them on their middle school step team. But when they transitioned to high school, they noticed something wasn’t quite right because the high school didn’t have a step team of its own.

“I feel like the step team helped people get involved and impacted my life as a whole,” said Hannah Carroll, Dragon Steppers co-captain. “And when I got into high school, I wanted more people to feel involved, too.”

Determined to get an opportunity for others to get involved, Hannah created a petition and took it straight to Collierville High’s principal.

“I tell people all the time, all of our students here at Collierville High School, you need to find something that you can connect with, something that you feel a part of,” said Roger Jones III, Collierville High School principal.

With their principal’s support, the girls, along with Collierville faculty members, formed the Dragon Steppers, a step team open to all who want to be involved.

The Dragon Steppers are already experiencing success after taking home a first and second-place trophy in their previous competition.

“After our last competition, they were just phenomenal,” Jones raved.

Their phenomenal steps earned them a trip to Atlanta where the Dragon Steppers hope to bring another first-place trophy back to the Mid-South.

“Of course in our first competition, we weren’t sure what we were getting into, but coming into this we’re going to go stronger and harder,” Sydney Morris, Dragon Stepper’s captain.

The Collierville Dragon Steppers are ready to step their way into Atlanta. We wish them the best of luck.
