ELKINS — A local business is helping bring a K9 officer to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office through donations.

Judy Ritchie of Clayton Homes of Elkins recently presented a personal check for $250 and a matching check from the company to Corporal E.B. Carr of the Sheriff’s Office.

Last month, the Randolph County Commission approved the purchase of a K9 officer by the Sheriff’s Office, and agreed to contribute $12,500 toward the purchase.

At that point, the Randolph County Deputy Sheriff’s Association had raised a total of $7,100 toward the purchase of the K-9 officer. The RCDSA set a goal of $25,000 for the purchase, broken down to $18,000 for the canine and training, and $7,000 for equipment and expenses.

According to the RCDSA Facebook page, the association is in the final stretch of fundraising, needing a bit more than $4,000 to complete the goal.

“This spring we decided as an association to begin a fundraising campaign in order to purchase a K-9 to donate back to the sheriff’s office,” Brice Cogar, president of the RCDSA, told commissioners last month. “We felt that this would be a great benefit for the community and would help in community relations as well serve citizens’ safety. It would also help in tracking and of course in detection of narcotics.

“With the help of many business and private donors, we have been able to raise enough for the down payment, which allowed us to go ahead and send one deputy up to Ohio to start training and get paired up with the canine.”

The Randolph County Deputy Sheriff’s Association consists of current and retired deputy sheriffs in Randolph County. It is a nonprofit organization that is entirely funded by donation from local businesses and citizens of Randolph County.

The Randolph County Deputy Sheriff’s Association is governed by a Board of Directors; a president, a vice president, a treasurer, and a secretary, all elected from the members. None of these people receive any monetary compensation for being in the positions they hold.
