Kimberly-Clark, the maker of those products and more, announced it will increase prices on some products in June to help off-set inflation.

With more people out of work during the pandemic, those with the Sweet Cheeks Diaper Ministry in Memphis said the increased prices could be devastating to parents already struggling to make ends meet.

“COVID has hit very hard, and my husband lost his job last year,” Sharmine Winton said.

Winston knows first-hand the effects the pandemic can have on a family.

As a mother of six, she said it’s been difficult to bring in enough money to afford diapers for her baby.

“Sometimes it has come down to eating or diapers,” Winston said.

That’s why she turned to Sweet Cheeks Diaper Ministry for help.

“A lot of people don’t realize diapers are the most expensive thing you can buy for your child,” founder of the ministry Cori Smith said. “It’s not a need, it is a necessity.”

Smith said they give out 15,000 to 20,000 diapers to families each month.

With the price of diapers increasing, she’s concerned more families will need assistance.

“What they’re doing is stretching what diapers they do have to make them last longer and using other items like t-shirts and towels to get them through, so they aren’t constantly buying diapers,” she said.

Smith said the ministry relies on donations.

On Tuesday, she said they received almost 100,000 diapers courtesy of the National Diaper Bank Network.

For moms like Winston, donations like these are a lifeline.

“To be able to get the diapers and not have to worry about where the next meal is coming from or not having to stress about a bill that has to be paid – it’s invaluable,” she said.

Kimberly-Clark also makes several other products – including facial tissue and feminine hygiene products.

The company has not said exactly how much prices will go up, but did say in a release: “the percentage increases are in the mid-to-high single digits.”
