Michigan’s Best Local Eats: ‘Dancing sandwiches’ sign a big draw for Genesee County bar and grill - mlive.com

BURTON, MI --A popular Burton bar and grill goes by two names.

While the local pub located at 5519 Lapeer Rd in Burton is technically called BJ’s Bar, many call it “Dancing Sandwiches” due to its iconic, albeit confusing, sign.

The first thing people notice about BJ’s as they pass the bar at the corner of Lapeer Road and Belsay is it’s sign. The sign has four panels reading: “BJ’s,” “Bar,” “Cocktails” and “Dancing Sandwiches.”

Tim and Linda Jackson have owned BJ’s for five and a half years.

“When we say BJ’s, people will say ‘Ohh, you mean Dancing Sandwiches,’” Linda Jackson said with a laugh.

The sign was made in the early 1970s, Tim Jackson said. The owner at the time, Betty Jean, had limited space to work with after ordering the sign, so she combined dancing and sandwiches at the bottom, Tim said.

“It’s been on J Lenno. It’s been on David Letterman. Johnny Knoxville commented on it,” Tim said.

While the sandwiches do not actually dance, BJ’s is known for its daily food specials. The bar’s burger is one of its most popular food items, but people also enjoy BJ’s fish fry, coney dogs, sloppy joe, steak and onion and tacos.

Food is available at the restaurant, for pick-up takeout or through DoorDash.

When the couple approached retirement, they decided to buy the bar on a whim. Tim had worked 32 years in the steal industry and Linda spent her career in education.

“We just walked in one day and asked the guy if he wanted to sell it and he did,” Tim said. “A year later we ended up owning it. It wasn’t something we planned.”

When bars and restaurants were shut down due to COVID-19 in 2020, Tim and Linda worked to remodel, replacing the carpets and redoing BJ’s bar area.

But the sign will never be replaced, Tim said.

The couple said they’ve loved every moment of owning the bar due to their incredible staff and customers.

“We love our customers,” Tim said. “We want them to walk out with the experience that we want when we walk out.”

BJ’s is open from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to midnight Sunday. The kitchen closes at 11 p.m.
