PEPPER PIKE, Ohio
Suspicion: Fairmount Boulevard
Officials at a local synagogue reported that a suspicious man, who has been identified by police and found to have an extensive criminal history in Cleveland, arrived on the property around 9 a.m. on Jan. 19 and wound up talking to a rabbi, asking for money.
When that didn’t pan out, police were told that he started showing interest in some valuables on display in the temple. No charges had been filed, but police were asked to formally ban him from the premises, notifying him that if he returns, he could face trespassing charges.
Suspicion: Lander Road
Ursuline College officials sought to ban a previously-enrolled Beachwood man, 27, from the campus on Jan. 21, citing recent emails and messages on social media considered out of character.
While police did not characterize them as threatening, the messages and posts -- involving Pokemon and other anime -- did merit special attention to the school, and a warning to the individual that he could face trespassing charges if he returns to the campus.
Traffic stop, driving under suspension: Shaker Boulevard
When a patrol officer returning to the police station on Jan. 19 noticed a car with darkly-tinted windows, the driver peeled out of the parking lot. Running the license plate, he found that the owner, a Garfield Heights woman, 28, had suspended driving privileges, as well as multiple warrants.
She turned out to be the driver, explaining that she was working for a delivery service at the time and stopped at the police station to check her GPS.
Fraud, identity theft, forgery, passing bad checks: North Pointe Drive
A resident reported Jan. 18 that someone had drawn up at least one counterfeit check on his mother’s bank account -- for which there were no checks issued -- then filled out, signed and cashed it for the sum of $48,600.
The check was cashed in Logan, Utah, and the bank already agreed to square up with the customer in order for its fraud department to proceed with its own investigation and the possibility of pursuing federal charges.
Disturbance, followup investigation: Chagrin Boulevard
The mother of an Orange High School student, then 14, who was reportedly assaulted by another girl, 15, inside the Orange Library Branch (both buildings are located in Pepper Pike) back on Nov. 5, came to the police station on Jan. 19 to report that the two had an argument the night before while both were attending a basketball game.
Although the latest incident did not appear to be criminal in nature, police planned to speak with the assailant from the previous attack.
Possession of drug paraphernalia, marijuana (seizure only): Chagrin Boulevard
After an Orange High teacher alerted the school resource officer that a student smelled strongly of suspected marijuana at around 10 a.m. on Jan. 14, nearly an ounce of weed (25 grams) was confiscated from the book bag of the Maple Heights man, 18, along with a digital scale that led to the misdemeanor charge.
Traffic stop: South Woodland Road
A Cleveland man, 41, had his Chevy Traverse towed after a registration check at 2 a.m. on Jan. 15 indicated that the license plate tag had expired in February 2021.
Disturbance: Lander Road
An officer mediated a verbal argument between a father and his daughter, 15, at around 11 a.m. on Jan. 16, with no charges filed.
