Man who shot at rangers at Everglades National Park apprehended - WPLG Local 10

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – An active shooter response was initiated at Everglades National Park on Sunday after a suspect fired shots at law enforcement rangers along the main park road on State Road 9336.

It all began earlier in the day when two park rangers responded to a domestic violence investigation at Mahogany Hammock. When rangers arrived, the suspect took of in a vehicle and headed south toward Flamingo.

At 5:52 p.m., rangers located an empty vehicle on the main park road, just south of Paurotis Pond. According to officials at ENP, evidence found at the scene indicated that the subject had fled into the woods and was armed.

Along with Miami-Dade Police Department, authorities then closed the Homestead entrance to the park on State Road 9336.

Approximately 20 miles from the Homestead entrance at 6:45 p.m., the 33-year-old white male suspect fired shots at law enforcement rangers along the main park road on State Road 9336.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Miami-Dade Police and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, responded to the scene and the suspect surrendered.

The person, who has not been identified, was taken into custody at 8:59 p.m. No one was injured.

State Road 9336 remained closed from the park entrance to Flamingo on Sunday evening.

Local 10 News is working to get the identity of the man and what charges he could be facing.
