NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) -A message of laying foundations and knowing a wise master builders list ties together the spring programs at North Platte Baptist Church. The church is holding weekly events called community days, aiming to bring the community together through service and outreach. On March 28, a raffle for lawn mowers was held for its members. The highlight of service was the $5,000 donation to Habitat for Humanities organization.
“It cost us about $5,000 to put in a foundation on a house, so this creates a foundation for a family to build a safe decent affordable home for and we cannot do without that strong foundation,” said Dalene Skates, Executive Director of North Platte Area Habitat Humanities.
Habitat for Humanities began building homes in the community in 1998. Since then, they have built 59 homes in North Platte. In 2020, the construction of homes was delayed due to the global pandemic.
“The past year as you can imagine was been difficult,” said Skates. “We have some amazing volunteers who kept going. We planned on building four houses last year then COVID hit. We couldn’t even start building. We only ended up building two homes. The other two families had to wait and they were patient.”
The church’s goal for the Community Days is for a greater purpose of building from a perspective of helping people.
“This is such an amazing community that comes out whenever we call,” said Skates. “We have great partners now we are great partners with North Platte Baptist. We were completely surprised when they contacted us and let us know they were doing this. What a blessing to just have folks who want to do this, just help families.”
Next Sunday, they will hold an Easter day service at 11 a.m. On April 11, they will hold a “We are the World” program uniting the community in an international way.
