In the Monticello Empire League softball opener for both teams, Will C. Wood High’s Lainie McClintick spun a five-hit shutout as the Wildcats toppled the Armijo Royals at Wood, 8-0.
McClintick was also 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Wood second baseman Gabby Fregoso excelled on defense and also had two hits and scored two runs.
Wood jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Fregoso led off with a single and Maddy Moorhead drew a walk. Alexis Sorenson reached on an error to load the bases, and McClintick drew a base on balls to drive in the first run. Danica Walker then belted a two-run double.
McClintick drove in a run in the second inning with a double, and the Wildcats had a big four-run inning in the third.
With one out, Lucy Welinske singled and Kaitlyn Martinez doubled her home. After two were out, Fregoso singled and Moorhead drove in Martinez and Fregoso with a single, Moorhead advancing to second on the throw home. Ferguson then plated Moorhead with a single.
McClintick struck out five Royals in her complete-game victory.
