TUNICA COUNTY, Miss. — Thieves may have an eye on a part of your car that you have likely never seen.
The Tunica County Sheriff’s Department has a warning about a rise in catalytic converter thefts.

FOX13 spoke to one man who said he’s been hit multiple times.
Tunica County’s Howard Mea runs a U-Haul business. He said he has been hit on more than one occasion.
“They got two of my U-Haul trucks catalytic converters from out from underneath and when you crank them up they are sounding like we have a race care. We didn’t have any idea they had got them. There has been several vehicles around the complex that have been hit,” Mea said.
Sheriff KC Hamp said that if folks can get up underneath their cars and etch their license plate numbers into the catalytic converter.
“Possibly could help, I mean who wants to crawl underneath a vehicle and etch a number in. They’re not supposed to be able to sell these just anywhere,” Mea said.

A catalytic converter is part of your car’s exhaust; it reduces pollutants from your experience from your engine. It also includes several pieces of precious metal like platinum or palladium or rhodium. That is worth the money.
Mea said that since the catalytic converters were stolen off his trucks, the sheriff’s department has stepped up patrols.
“We let the police know that we got activity down here and we needed some help, they helped coming through a lot more,” Mea said.
The sheriff told us the thieves have gotten so bold they stole catalytic converters off of neighboring county’s patrol cars. He said there is a multi-county investigation into the thefts.
“I think they are just lowlifes, they’re out to get anything they can get their hands on and they don’t want to work, they are bums, " Mea said.
The Tunica County Sheriff’s Department said one of the best things you can do to prevent catalytic converter theft is to park in a well-lit area.
