The American Basketball Hall of Fame out of Detroit prides itself on recognizing basketball stars of note who reached the doorstep but did not get into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
It is a tweeners’ delight.
The new hall, which sprouted in 2019 due in large part to the efforts of Jeannette graduate Lamont “Showboat” Robinson, an acclaimed name on the comedy basketball circuit with Harlem Globetrotters and Harlem Clowns.
The hall has come up with a list of 100 former players whom, it believes, are the greatest to never have played in the NBA — the “Greatest Unsung Basketball Players Of All Times, ” as the list is called.
In a press release, the ABHOF said NBA players “will tell you that there were guys that they grew up with that were more talented and even more gifted than they were. For various reasons they never got to showcase their talent in the NBA, where the world could recognize and appreciate their talent.
“These players have built major reputations in the playgrounds, high schools, small colleges, barnstorming teams, USBL, CBA, ABA, overseas, and in NBA tryout camps.”
Thirteen players selected hail from Western Pennsylvania. Robinson made the list and he wasn’t shy about shining a light on his roots, as he included former Jeannette stars Terrelle Pryor, Adam “Dutzie” Bostick and Charles “Chan” Chamberlain.
Other area players picked include former Fifth Avenue and Point Park star Warner Macklin; Sam Clancy, a Fifth Avenue, Brashear and Pitt alum who became a football standout; Hosea Champine (General Braddock High School and Robert Morris); Larry Anderson (Schenley/UNLV); Ronnie Hightower (Allegheny/Robert Morris); Billy Varner (Valley/Notre Dame); B.B.
