FAIRMONT– Now that Thanksgiving is passed, many people will be getting a start on their holiday shopping this weekend. While big box stores have monopolized on Black Friday, the Saturday after Thanksgiving is deemed Small Business Saturday.
The National Retail Federation forecasts that holiday sales during November and December will grow between 8.5 percent and 10.5 percent over 2020.
This holiday season looks very different than last year’s and an increase in spending will certainly help boost the economy, but where you’re spending that money matters, too.
“The Fairmont Chamber of Commerce would encourage people to always think ‘Fairmont First,’ said Ned Koppen, President of the Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce.
Koppen said last weekend’s Glows Parade was the area’s kick-off to the holiday shopping season.
“We ask people to really be intentional when you’re shopping and see if you can buy it locally before you look elsewhere,” Koppen said.
He said it’s easy for locals to forget about what’s all available in the area. He shared that the Retail, Business and Entertainment Committee came up with 10 reasons why supporting local businesses are important. Supporting local businesses creates jobs for the community, supports neighbors, builds community pride and donates back to the community.
“During your Christmas shopping season, you’re accomplishing all of that for your local community,” Koppen said.
He said people will also get their best service and form their best relationships with local businesses.
Koppen added that while people are shopping locally, it provides a good opportunity to enjoy local eating establishments.
“And if you’re doing that, why wouldn’t you enjoy the entertainment options that we have as well,” he said.
While a lot of people like to go to Mankato and make a day out of their trip, shopping and eating, Koppen challenged them to do it here.
“Don’t spend time and money running up there, do that here, where the money is re-circulated in the community,” Koppen said.
