During this giving season, a lot of worthy organizations are vying for your attention. As a reader of The Record North Shore, you can demonstrate the value it brings to your community by making a donation today.
Every dollar donated to The Record North Shore advances local-news efforts in New Trier Township. And until the end of the year, that goes double.
The Record was again chosen to participate in a special grant program called NewsMatch, which will match all donations received in November and December of 2021.
“NewsMatch is our largest and most-important campaign of the year,” Record Editor in Chief Joe Coughlin said. “The support, if we hit our goals, allows us to focus more time and energy on impactful local stories and fewer resources on fundraising. And that’s what the community deserves.”
The Record has raised $5,400 so far in the campaign and hopes to raise another $2,500 on Giving Tuesday, Nov. 30. (CLICK BELOW TO DONATE)
From the ashes of seven local news titles (including The Wilmette Beacon, Winnetka Current and Glencoe Anchor), The Record launched on Oct. 1, 2020, to restore responsible and nonpartisan community-news coverage in the northern suburbs. As a nonprofit newsroom, The Record’s journalism is fueled almost entirely by the community that benefits from it. Subscriptions, individual donations and local sponsors account for more than 90 percent of Record funding.
In its first year, The Record published more than 800 local stories from 16 reporters, covering everything from COVID-19-related news and updates to development and business news to local board decisions and debates. All of The Record’s public-service journalism is free for all to read.
Each week, to serve and inform the community, The Record reviews village documents, submits public-records requests, speaks with dozens of local sources, attends multiple events, and publishes reliable news and information. It is time-consuming and tiring work that is unmatched in the area and that nurtures the community’s well-being.
The Record’s first year of journalism was viewed by more than 250,000 people at TheRecordNorthShore.org. The Record North Shore also earned recognition as Best Startup in the Chicago Headline Club’s Peter Lisagor Awards.
Last year, The Record raised more than $12,000 with NewsMatch, which then doubled that total.
NewsMatch is an industrywide movement to sustain journalism and has provided more than $150 million to power nonprofit newsrooms.
This year, NewsMatch will match every dollar donated in November and December up to $1,000 per donation and $10,000 in total. The program also matches monthly donations for the entire year; so for a $50 monthly donation, NewsMatch will give $600.
“Reliable news and information is vital to a community’s well-being,” Coughlin said. “Everybody deserves to have access to local information that informs their daily lives. That’s what we do, and resident support is the engine. We hope you can support those efforts. And we thank those we have and continue to do so.”
