Comcast Awards Grants to 100 Local BIPOC Founders

The small business owners will each receive $10,000 plus marketing and tech support from the Comcast RISE program.

Bakeries, creative agencies, clothing lines, a counseling center, and software companies are among the 100 BIPOC-owned Twin Cities small businesses to each receive a $10,000 grant from Comcast.

The Philadelphia-based cable giant’s Comcast RISE program provides capital to small business owners. RISE stands for Representation, Investment, Strength and Empowerment. It’s part of a broader effort from Comcast NBC Universal to “fight injustice and inequality.”

Minnesota’s recipients, announced Tuesday, are among nearly 6,700 entrepreneurs nationwide to benefit from the program, which was launched in response to the economic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. In its first year, RISE has awarded more than $11 million in grants and $50 million in in-kind support.

Recipient Henrietta Smaller of Stunning Beauty Supply in Burnsville said she’ll use the money to add staff. “It feels great to know someone believes in me and my dream,” she said in a statement.

Already planning for its next cohort of small business recipients, Comcast said Tuesday it will expand RISE eligibility in 2022 to all women-owned small businesses.
