LISBON — The gift of a local artist will be raffled off the Sunday afternoon of the Johnny Appleseed Festival.
Steve Belaney, a retired Lisbon resident who now has more time to pursue his lifelong passion for art, painted a summer view of the Columbiana County Courthouse and the Lisbon Village Square.
From that painting, a limited numbered edition of 10 prints were created. The number one print was recently gifted to the Lisbon Historical Society, which with the artist’s permission will raffle the picture off.
The winner will be drawn during the upcoming annual festival on Sept. 19.
Belaney has had an strong interest in art since he was a child, when he remembers his mother chastising him for entertaining himself during mass at St. George Catholic Church by making figures in the air connecting the points on the ceiling.
As he grew, his interest in art developed starting with making paper airplanes and then building with kits and models.
He studied drawing, with an interest in sketching cars, airplanes and boats.
He took a mail-in art class at age 11. At some point he began painting portraits and landscapes. Relatives began having prints made of some of their favorite paintings.
The 1967 David Anderson High School graduate’s art took a backseat as a hobby while he became an apprentice engineer and then an engineer, a field he remained in for 53 years.
Belaney writes he believes now is the time for him to pursue his first love and create art that someone may want to own and display in their home.
After seeing some of Belaney’s paintings and prints, the historical society inquired if he would be interested in partnering with them on fundraising efforts this year, introducing Belaney’s work to local residents.
The print of the painting, which is framed and ready to hang, was on display at the Lisbon Historical Society picnic on Aug. 19, then was displayed at Dashing Divas Boutique after that and can currently be viewed in the lobby of the Columbiana County Courthouse.
Tickets cost $5 and can be purchased from members of the Lisbon Historical Society, including at the Erie Train Station on Tuesday and by calling Gene Krotky of the Lisbon Historical Society at 330-277- 3116.
Krotky said the board hopes sales of tickets for the print will help the group to recoup some of the money they have been unable to raise during the COVID-19 pandemic. While donations and events have been canceled, Krotky points out the needed repair work to keep the old structures the society cares for viable continued, such as the Old Stone House, the Erie Station and the Bye Barn.
Belaney currently displays his work at The Local Artisan’s Loft on South Main Street in Columbiana and at the Bridge Street Art Works in the historic harbor district in Ashtabula.
