ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico Foundation teamed up with local, regional and national foundations. Together, they are putting $5.5 million dollars toward the Native American Recovery Fund Zone Grant.

Officials say the goal is to address the long-term infrastructure needs of tribes in New Mexico. They also hope this limited local money will help tribes gain access to more federal funding.

"We're targeting 5 focus areas,” said JoAnn Melchor, president and CEO of New Mexico Foundation. “Family Economic Security, Local Food Systems, Health Systems, Opportunity Youth, and Water Resilience."

Melchor added that the foundation’s ultimate goal is to support all 23 tribes, but for now, they have to start small. So in the program is only funding 12 Native American-led recovery projects in its first year.
