A local veterans group is getting ready to host its 12th annual golf outing fundraiser.
The event is set for Saturday, Sept. 11 at the Maple Creek Golf Course in Shepherd.
It’s hosted by Mt. Pleasant-based Central Michigan Veteran’s Fund, which has raised nearly $100,000 since 2010 to provide college scholarships to area military veterans and their dependents.
The nonprofit group, which serves Isabella, Gratiot, Clare and Mecosta counties, is also involved in sponsoring educational programs and raising awareness of “reintegration issues” facing servicemen and women as they return home from combat zones around the world.
Registration for the golf outing begins at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
The cost for the 18-hole, four-person scramble is $75 per person and includes a cart, meal and prizes.
There is room for 30 teams and 120 golfers.
Even during the pandemic the outing was held in 2020, with 111 participants raising $6,500 to fund eight scholarships for Central Michigan University and Mid Michigan College students. Also, two $500 scholarships were awarded to two local high school students who have a parent currently serving in the military or is a veteran.
To date, the Central Michigan Veteran’s Fund has provided a total of 140 scholarships and nearly $3,000 each to the CMU and MMC Student Veterans of America chapters for helping run the golf tournament.
In addition, the group has an endowment fund through the Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation that was created in 2018 as a permanent funding source.
This year’s golf outing will be preceded by a skydiving exhibition featuring a team of veteran paratroopers from Raeford, North Carolina near Fort Bragg.
It begins at 8:15 a.m. and is free to the public but donations will be accepted.
“It’s a nice family event,” Board Secretary David Smith said. “We have a small board of about 10 people who organize and put everything together.”
The Central Michigan Veteran’s Fund was founded by Patrick Birgy, William Cain, Terry Kunst, Brian Rush and Nick Cononico Jr., all veterans of Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
