GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) - Congresswoman Lauren Boebert, Mesa County Commissioners, and the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce stood together on Wednesday in a push to keep the Bureau of Land Management headquarters in Grand Junction.

Together, they invited the new Secretary of Interior Deb Haaland to visit the BLM headquarters. The invitation mentioned their “strong support for keeping and establishing a full national headquarters in Grand Junction.”

They mentioned the BLM’s economic impact on the valley, which they say has brought high-paying jobs to the area.

“Obviously this is a job creator,” says the Chamber’s Diane Schwenke. “It has an $11 million impact on our economy. And that’s $11 million that we don’t want to lose as we move forward in future years. And in fact, we’d like to see that grow.”

Another emphasis that was brought up as a point to keep the headquarters in Grand Junction is that 99% of the 245 million acres managed by the BLM are in the west.

The Biden Administration has reportedly discussed relocating the BLM headquarters away from Grand Junction in the future. Other local, federal, and state officials have asked the administration to keep the headquarters where it is.
