BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - The United Way provides connections for resources throughout the commonwealth to many who are in need. Just recently they have even made it easier to get assistance simply by sending a text message.
They’ve raised money to support families in need during this pandemic--through food drives and pantries.
And continue to be a beacon of support through their many networks and services. Recently the United Way Worldwide CEO resigned. The local United Way of Southern Kentucky and the President of United Way of Kentucky wanted to assure Kentuckians these actions will not impact the way they continue to help, especially during this pandemic.
“It’s been widely reported in some of the national media that Brian Gallagher, the President, and CEO of United Way Worldwide, announced that he was stepping down from his position, effective March 1. As it relates to the United Way of Southern Kentucky, it really has little if any impact other than it’s a statement of fact about the national organization of which we are part. The National Organization has no governing control over any local United Way. We are a member of the organization and there are certain standards that we have to make to be a member. But we like all local United Way’s are governed by a local board of directors, comprised of local community leaders, and ours happens to have 28 members from across our service area that is responsible for leading the efforts of United Way of Southern Kentucky. We have a long term commitment at United West southern Kentucky to diversity and equity and ensuring the needs of everyone in the community are met. And that commitment will not waver, it will continue. Obviously, we are a female-led organization, as I serve as president and CEO of that 28 member board of directors, almost half are female, including the chairman of the board. So we do our very best to represent the diversity in the community as we diligently work to ensure that every member of our community is educated and healthy and financially stable,” said United Way President and CEO, Debbie Hill.
13 News also spoke with the President of the United Way of Kentucky.
“Local boards are responsible solely responsible for every decision that’s made in those local communities on how donations are used, how they’ve invested the local thing for that local community, that means that our local donors can trust that their dollars are going to work right there at home. Now, I think it’s important to be clear about this--as you know, 16 of the 21 local United Way’s serving Commonwealth of Kentucky are led by committed women leaders, who are some of the most impactful professionals in our state. Further, my organization, the United Way state association has been truly remarkable women professionals for 26 of its 37 years serving this network. And for the 14 years that I’ve been with the organization six out of eight of our amazing board chairs have been women, including all of the chairs that have served in the roles I took over leadership in 2015. This is reflected in the United Way network across the United States. And local United Way’s like United Way of Southern Kentucky are the heroes of this story,” said Kevin Middleton.
