MEMPHIS, Tenn. — MLGW says they see the light at the end of the tunnel in the water crisis impacting more than 250,000 customers in Memphis and Shelby County.
Meanwhile, Mid-South businesses, churches, and city leaders are stepping up to provide free water.
The Tennessee Valley Authority says they have delivered over 80,000 bottles of water to folks in Memphis. Champion’s Pharmacy and Herb Store is helping to distribute it to folks who need it.
“We have had a lot of calls and a lot of people in the neighborhood in need, and we’re just here,” said Dr. Carol “Cookie” Champion. “We’ve never closed our door during the pandemic. First of all, we’ve never closed our doors, and we’ve been very accessible for the community, and this is just an add-on at this point to be able to give to the Memphis community this water.”

Champion’s father started the pharmacy in South Memphis 40 years ago. They’ve become part of the community and a staple in the Bluff City. Dr. Carol “Cookie” Champion says she’s never seen anything like this. Helping others is just part of what they do.
“I have a sister along with my father that we are here, and we are just keeping things going,” she said. “Of course, with my father’s legacy, we want to make sure we are doing in the heart of him. He really cares about the community, and we are here caring as well.”
Champion, who is also a pharmacist, said she knows the importance of staying healthy and helping others do the same.
Champion says they launched a mobile unit during the pandemic and says once the water at the store is gone, they plan to go into the community and help people who may not be able to get out of their homes.
“We are waiting on our second load of water to come in, and if we still have water left after 4 this afternoon, we will use our truck to deliver it to people in the community. That’s why we got the truck, and we will be able to utilize the truck in a lot of ways -so excited about that,” said Champion.
She also has some advice for the hundreds of thousands impacted by this water crisis.
“It is important to listen to the guidelines that’s being provided by our city, please. We can all come together to use less water. As far as washing dishes, washing cars, that can wait. I know that we are all suffering with our dirty cars right now, but these are serious times right now, and we need to help one another during this time,” said Champion.
TVA says once this water is gone, they already have plans to bring more bottled water to the Memphis area.
