MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Phillip Ashley Rix, who runs Phillip Ashley Chocolates, has become known all over the world and his chocolates have brought a taste of Memphis with them.

To honor the rich tradition of Black history month, FOX13 is pausing to recognize and highlight the faces and contributions of Black men and women in the communities many of them serve.

Speaking in an interview, Ashley Rix said the vision for his business came to him in a dream. His brand has now become known worldwide for its unique flavor.

All of it is made in Memphis at his chocolate factory in the city’s medical district.

“It all began waking up from a dream (at) 3 o’clock in the morning one day. I said I’m going to be a chocolatier the rest of my life ― make chocolate,” he said.

Rix’s daydreams also look different than most.

“I daydream about chocolate quite a bit and live inside my head, and that’s how a lot of these flavors come about,” said Ashley Rix of chocolates.

Food has been on Rix’s mind for years, he said. Rix was born and raised in north Memphis and said food was something everyone did well.

“I grew up cooking,” he said “I learned how to cook when I was five. that definitely helps. My grandmother taught me how to cook.”

From the boy in north Memphis sprang the man, the business owner.

“I put blue cheese in chocolate; we have sweet potato chocolate; barbeque chocolate because we’re in Memphis,” he said.

His chocolates, specifically his chocolate turtles were put on Oprah’s favorite thing’s list for 2020.

“(The turtles) really blew up. We have a backlog of those,” Rix said.

After building his own successful business, Rix now turns to entrepreneurs of color with advice.

“I always say people want to buy into you before they buy from you,” he said.
