NFL Network’s Charley Casserly has the Jets picking a quarterback and an edge rusher with their first-round picks in his first 2021 NFL mock draft.

After Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence goes No. 1 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars, Casserly has the Jets taking a second quarterback off the board. That would be BYU’s Zach Wilson.

Casserly explains that the Wilson pick follows New York’s decision to trade Sam Darnold.

The Jets have yet to decide on Darnold’s future and will not do so until they complete their evaluations on all the top quarterbacks in the draft. Joe Douglas and his staff could very well keep Darnold if they don’t like what they see from the quarterback prospects in this year’s draft. Darnold still has one year left on his rookie contract and a fifth-year option for 2022.

Wilson’s stock has been rising steadily over the past few weeks. The BYU quarterback had a phenomenal junior season in 2020. Wilson had a 73.5 completion percentage to go alongside 3,692 passing yards, 33 touchdowns, and only three interceptions in 12 games. He also added 254 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.

For the Jets’ second first-round pick, Casserly has them taking Washington edge rusher Joe Tryon.

Here’s Casserly’s reasoning for the pick:

There’s a chance the Jets fill this need in free agency, but if they don’t, Tryon would fit well in Robert Saleh’s scheme.

There are a ton of edge rushers hitting the open market in free agency this offseason. The question is would the Jets rather pay top dollar for an edge rusher or take a chance on one in the draft? If last offseason was any indication as to how Douglas operates, it’s that he is conservative with spending money in free agency. If that’s the case again, the draft could be the path he takes to find an edge rusher.

Tryon sat out of the 2020 college football season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to focus on getting ready for the draft. In Tyron’s two seasons at Washington, he played in 23 games and recorded 37 total tackles, 14.5 for loss, nine sacks and two pass defenses. Tyron was Second-team All-Pac 12 in 2019.
