CENTRAL ILLINOIS (25 News Now) - A report from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) shows three schools in the region have no students meeting grade level standards in subjects including math and reading.
These scores are based off one state test given each year to students each spring.
The January report from ISBE shows no students at Trewyn Primary School in Peoria or YouthBuild McLean County Charter School (YBMC) performed math at grade level, according to state standards.
For reading, Delavan High School has no students testing at grade level. YBMC also does not have any students reading at grade level.
However, they’re not alone. 30 schools in the state don’t have any students at proper reading levels and 53 don’t hit standard math scores on tests given last spring.
“A student is not just a test score. A test score while important, and can give us a measurement, it’s one point in time. Who knows what was happening that day, what happened that weekend did they eat breakfast?” said Peoria County Regional Superintendent Beth Crider.
Crider says when a school is not meeting state standards, the ISBE will step in to provide resources.
“They have access to resources through the Illinois empower network and they can align the professional learning that they need to the needs of their students so that the teachers and administrators get what they need,” said Crider.
Regional Offices of Education also provide resources to districts based on their needs.
“Certainly, it’s concerning when students aren’t achieving at a level, but we try to look at the whole child and look at multiple measures to get a better picture at how a student is progressing,” said Regional Superintendent of Livingston, Logan and McLean Counties Mark Jontry.
Peoria Public Schools administrators tell 25News they have strategies they’re currently using to target low-math proficiency. For example, there’s a new program helping teachers come up with engaging math lessons, buying new math curriculum and hiring tutors from Illinois Central College this year.
“Research is showing we need three things. We need after-school programming, we need summer programming, and we need high quality tutoring,” said Crider.
Delavan High School and YBMC Charter School did not respond Wednesday to questions about their student scores.
