UNION LOCAL’S Keira Gregor was near-perfect for four innings Monday as she didn’t allow a hit, but did hit a batter. She settled for a four-hitter in the Jets’ 12-2 Division III sectional tournament opener in Morristown. The game lasted four-and-a-half innings.

MORRISTOWN — Outstanding pitching, solid defense and one breakout inning was the recipe for a quick victory as Union Local opened the Division III sectional softball tournament Monday.

Keira Gregor was nearly perfect for four innings; the Jets played flawless in the field and a 12-run second inning was all the hosts would need in rolling past 10th-seeded Coshocton 12-2 in a game that was halted in the fifth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.

With the victory — which came in exactly one hour — eighth-seeded Union Local advances to play the winner of No. 1 Martins Ferry and No. 14 West Muskingum on Wednesday. The Purple Riders and Tornadoes were postponed Monday and will play today at 5 p.m. high atop the Purple City. A Martins Ferry win would send UL to the hilltop, while a loss would allow the Jets another home game.

“We pitched well and we hit the ball well,” Lahna said. “It was everyone, too.

Gregor retired the free-swinging Redskins (6-16) on just four pitches in the first inning before hitting Lydia Dawson with a 1-1 pitch to start the second. Dawson was erased on a forceout as Gregor needed just nine offerings to get through the second.

The junior carried a no-hitter into the fifth as the Redskins had failed to hit a ball to the outfield grass. She induced seven popups that were all caught, with three of them being in foul territory.

“We have lost quite a few games by dropping popups and we caught all of them today,” she said with a smile. “Last week we lost two games by not catching popups, but that was in the regular season. This (the tournament) is the only season that counts now.”

Gregor finished with a four-hitter, two strikeouts and a base-on-balls. She threw 75 pitches (27 in the fifth) with 48 being strikes.

“She’s not an overpowering pitcher, but she can work both sides of the plate,” Lahna said of Gregor. “In the first four innings we were mostly working on the inside and I switched it up to the outside in the fifth. She left a couple of pitches up and they hit them, which was no big deal because we had the big lead.

“She’s not going to throw it 65 miles an hour but she can put it where she wants it,” Lahna added. “She was pretty good for four innings tonight.”

It was Gregor that started the 12-run outburst with a single. She was replaced on the basepaths by courtesy runner Casey Kildow who is sidelined from playing the field or batting with a broken right hand.

“She played half the season with a broken hand before anybody realized it,” Lahna noted. “Today was her first day back in uniform.”

Ava Lucas had a pair of RBI singles in the inning while Rylee Magnani cleared the bases with a triple. Hannah Merritt also drove in a run with a triple as the Jets sent 17 batters to the plate, and all nine positions in the order scored at least once. Coshocton was guilty of a trio of errors that aided the outburst.

Torre Kildow finished with two singles and a run batted in. Alleigh Cheatham also had an RBI.

Sophie Meiser singled in a run and Alison Cox doubled in the other. Hailey Helter broke up the no-no by lining a 1-2 pitch to the left-centerfield gap for a double leading off the fifth.
