SALEM — A group of Salem High School students focused on philanthropy may foster friendship and kindness with their latest donation: four benches for the city parks.

Not just any benches, though.

Three are known as “buddy benches,” where a lonely child can sit to let other children know they’re looking for a playground buddy.

Two of the buddy benches will be placed at the Centennial Park Swings & Things playground and one will go to the Waterworth Memorial Park playground. The location for a longer 8-foot bench hasn’t been decided.

Known as Youth in Philanthropy, or YIP for short, the service group started in January 2019 as a youth extension of the Salem Community Foundation, aimed at helping students learn how they can impact their community in a positive way. The students work with funds provided by SCF, deciding how to distribute grants to 501(c)3 non-profit organizations, Salem schools and the city of Salem.

Advisors include SCF Grant Coordinator Melissa Costa, SCF Donor Relations Coordinator Brittany Zamarelli and Buckeye School first grade teacher Ryan Barrett.

YIP members include Wilson Corbisello, Hannah Bowers, Emma Hochadel, Andrew Wilson, Will Madison, Angela McCracken, Garrett Menough, Collin Helmick, Libby Ripley, Kyla Jamison, Mallory Hudsonf and Chloe Wilhelm.

SCF serves as the sponsor of the YIP program. According to a press release, SCF “is a public, non-profit charitable trust and our mission is to improve the quality of life in the Salem area. Grants are provided through endowment funds established by generous donors and support a broad range of needs in the areas of arts and humanities, health and human services, public and community services, and education.”

“We are grateful to the YIP students and advisors for all they have done for our parks over the past few years. Not just for these new benches, but for many other things as well. Great group of young adults with excellent leadership. Salem is very lucky to have such a fine group of young people looking to do good in our community. They certainly have made a difference in our parks,” Salem City Parks Director Shane Franks said.

Other 2021 grant recipients through YIP include: Nina’s Closet for baby and toddler items such as toothpaste, hair wash, body wash, moisturizing lotion, baby wipes, baby fork and spoon sets, and baby hair brush and comb sets; Salem Area Chamber of Commerce through sponsorship of five small downtown planters for the Adopt-a-Planter Program; Southeast Elementary School Quaker Store incentive items for “Good Student Citizens” such as mechanical pencils, colored pencils, erasers, and computer mice with USB accessibility; Salem Community Pantry personal hygiene products and household items such as shampoo, conditioner, wash soap, deodorant, dish soap, napkins, paper towels, plastic bags, toilet paper, and laundry detergent; and Salvation Army winter gloves and hats and educational toys for local children.

For a community service project this year, YIP selected First Presbyterian Church to help the preschool organize education play sets and large motor skill riding toys.
