Grand Forks head coach Brent Newman: “We made it to the end of a mentally and physically challenging season that many didn’t think would get past Christmas break. We are more than grateful to have had the opportunity to compete today at the state meet even though it was way outside the box of what a normal state competition should look and feel like. Having only the one day to both travel and compete put this group of guys into the position of really putting to task the elements we have been trying to instill in them through our training. Attitude and effort won the day as the guy stayed on top of their game. They pushed through the significant adversity and focused on what they were able to control and the end result was everybody on this team today either had career best efforts or were just off by a small margin. Even our diver managed to remain focused following a significant misstep to start his day. This all adds up to the mental toughness these guys have worked to develop for another season in this amazing and tough sport. We could not be more proud of the leadership provided by our captains throughout this crazy season and the willingness of each individual to do their part to be sure we were able to continue training and competing. We are really excited how the season developed with the work these guys put in each day. There is significant potential for the guys that are returning next year to keep building off this success. It is important for them to take some time off to recover and reflect, and then to start recruiting and building on their improvements from this year to make next year even better.”
