As we approach the holidays and more elected boards head into their holiday break, the local government calendar is a bit lighter this week. But there are still some key issues on the agenda – including a new elementary school in Chatham County and affordable housing in Orange.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

This week, every local government meeting in Orange County is taking place in Hillsborough – beginning with the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners, meeting in Town Hall at 7 p.m. on Monday, December 12. Commissioners have a lighter agenda this week, mostly consisting of rezoning discussions – though one of those discussions involves the town’s future train station. Get the full agenda here.

The Orange County School Board also meets Monday at 7 p.m., across town in the Whitted Building. Board members will hold a work session on the district’s strategic plan and hear from their committee on Community Engagement. Get the full agenda at this link.

Orange County Commissioners also meet in the Whitted Building, 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 13. Commissioners will hear an annual report from the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), and they’ll discuss the possible usage of county-owned property for affordable housing. Click here for the full agenda. Prior to the meeting, commissioners will join a reception in honor of longtime clerk Donna Baker, who passed away in 2020; the board’s meeting room has been named in her honor.

Chatham and Durham Counties

The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners meets Monday, December 12, at 7 p.m. in the Chatham County Agriculture and Conference Center. Click here for their agenda, which includes a continued discussion of Chatham Park Way and an emergency response plan for the town’s water system.

The Chatham County School Board also meets on Monday, December 12, at 6 p.m. in George Moses Horton Middle School. The board will consider a possible site for a new elementary school in Chatham Park, vote on a tuition increase for the district’s pre-K program, and honor Northwood High School’s Bradford Walston as the district’s Principal of the Year. Get the full agenda here.

And Chatham County Commissioners are holding a work session on the county’s 2030 capital improvement plan. That meeting will be on Tuesday morning, December 13, starting at 9 a.m. in the Agriculture and Conference Center. Click here for a link to the full agenda.

Durham County Commissioners also meet this week, on Monday, December 12 at 7 p.m. in commissioners’ chambers. Commissioners will vote on staff recommendations for the use of federal COVID relief funds. Get the full agenda at this link.
