Syracuse, N.Y. — Dozens of people in Syracuse gathered Sunday to grieve the victims of this weekend’s deadly shooting at a Tops grocery store in Buffalo.
Community members gathered in the parking lot outside the Tops on Pond Street and Nottingham Road to remember the 10 people killed and three injured in a racist attack Saturday at the Buffalo supermarket.
“We prayed for the victims,” Syracuse community activist Alfonso Davis said at a vigil Sunday at the Tops at Nottingham Plaza. “We prayed for the people who shop here at Tops and we prayed for the workers. We prayed for everybody in Buffalo and in our community in Syracuse.”
Haz Bloodworth organized the rally and vigil Sunday evening outside the Tops on Pond Street. In a social media post, Bloodworth talked about how “the tears of senseless acts of violence due to racism in our community is overwhelming.” He asked the community to come together.
“The pain is unbearable and the path to healing is so far down the road unless we as a people, stand together as one,” he wrote.
Among the victims were Roberta Drury, 32, a former Cicero-North Syracuse High School student; and Andre “Drew” Mackniel Sr., 53, who lived in Buffalo but has family in Syracuse and Auburn.
Davis said he was friends with Mackniel and last saw him about six months ago at Mackniel’s sister-in-law’s home in Auburn. “He was a good person, always kind and respectful,” Davis said, adding that his friend was killed while inside Tops getting a birthday cake for his (Mackniel’s) 3-year-old son.
“He didn’t deserve to be gunned down like that,” Davis said. “None of the victims deserved that.”
