Texas senior Pierceson Coody, a Plano West graduate, was named one of the 10 semifinalists for the Ben Hogan Award. The list is dominated by players with Texas and Oklahoma ties. Of the 10 semifinalists, seven play for schools in the two states.

Coody, No. 2 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, has four top-15 finishes in five stroke-play events this year. He was a finalist in 2021 and is a semifinalist for the third year in a row. He is joined by teammate Cole Hammer, making Texas the only school with multiple semifinalists. The list will be reduced to three finalists May 5.

The award goes to the top men’s NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or NJCAA college golfer based on all collegiate, amateur and professional events over the previous 12 months. The winner will be announced on May 23 at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth. He will receive an exemption into the 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge.

Two area club pros qualify for PGA field

Preston Trail assistant pro Nik Ishee and Bent Tree assistant pro Brandon Bingaman will be playing in the PGA Championship next month at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa.

They tied for 11th at the PGA Professional Championship on Wednesday at Omni Barton Creek Resort. The top 20 finishers qualified for the PGA Championship on May 19-22.

Bingaman, the Northern Texas PGA player of the year in 2021, shot a 5-under 66, tied for the best round of the day, to move up 50 spots into the top 20 at 1-under 282. Ishee shot 2-over 73 in the final round.

Adam Headley of Midland’s Green Tree Country Club finished one shot outside the top 20 with a 1-over 284. Six other players representing the Northern Texas PGA missed the cut.

Army vets to represent NTPGA in Oklahoma

Four Army veterans will represent the Northern Texas PGA in the PGA HOPE Secretary’s Cup on May 16 at The Club Indian Springs in Broken Arrow, Okla. Ira Molayo, the director of golf at Cedar Crest Golf Course, will lead the team in the nine-hole event that kicks off PGA Championship week in the Tulsa area.

The Northern Texas team: Randy Shack, Derrick King, Dominick Antonino and Jeremy Balmonte.

The 12-team event features military veterans who have participated in the PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) program, which introduces golf to veterans to enhance their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being.
