BRUNSWICK, Ohio – When one thinks about choreographing a dance to the music of Harry Potter or a hit country tune, you might not immediately think of belly dancing as the genre. But that’s just what happens when four local ladies, known as Third Tent from the Nile, take the stage.

With easing of pandemic restrictions, the troupe has resumed performing live for assisted living facilities and other venues. This year they performed on two days during the Medina County Fall Foliage Tour and have been regulars at other Brunswick events.

For the second year, the women have performed via video for the Canadian Halloween Show, Hips that go Bump in the Night, sponsored by the Almeh Sisters of Belly Dance. And the Nerdy Dancers of Cleveland have also been hosting video performances.

With the Heritage Farm barn as its background recently, the four dancers were decked out in plaid shirts, straw hats, black tights and the more traditional belt with lots of bling. The music of Luke Bryan rings out, “Country Girls Shake it for Me,” and the rest is pure entertainment.

These busy women, Joyce, Sue, Jen and Jennifer (professionally known as Naia, Akiza, Kisara and Luna) are four ladies from the Brunswick who celebrate each other’s love for dance combined with all the other quirkiness in their lives including but not limited to children, spouses, farm animals, jobs and home renovation.

The troupe does perform to traditional music but prides itself on performing other genres spanning artists like Maroon 5, Shakira, Sarah Brightman and One Republic. Last year’s shows included music from the movies Pirates of The Caribbean and Harry Potter, with the country performance was added this year.

Belly dance, or oriental dance, is an Arabic expressive dance that has its origins in ancient Egypt. It features movements of the hips and torso. It has evolved to take many different forms depending on the country and region. These ladies call it fusion belly dance.

The group itself was founded 16 years ago by Cherie Dillon and Patty Kareha who still support the troupe, but no longer perform. The current members met each other through other organizations such as 4-H and church groups and through other family members.

Each had some dance training and they all take part in choreographing each number. Joyce is the technical director, handling the music and videotaping.

The troupe is just one of many in the northern Ohio area, each a little different from the other.

“We are more modest,” Sue said, “we don’t like showing too much skin and we want to remain family friendly. And we love that we are able to perform for all ages and can demonstrate body positivity.”

Some of the biggest fans at their public performances are children because they are often invited to join the dancers and get a chance to wear some of the beautiful scarves and fancy belts as they try to move to the music.
