Sean Capri, 37, is from Alberta, Canada. He has been an active gamer his entire life, and this weekend, he played games from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday. It was all to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network hospitals, including the the Mohawk Valley Health System.

“This is kind of childhood extended into adult life and raising money for the kids, which is kind of full circle," said Sean Capri, a Phoenix Overdrive member.

This is Capri’s fourth year fundraising for Extra Life with the Phoenix Overdrive gaming team.

“Lee, the fearless leader of Phoenix Overdrive, him and I met making podcasts a number of years ago and honestly it was right from day one, he invited me to be a part of this," said Capri.

“Extra Life began in 2008 as a small, grass roots event to support a little girl who’s name was Tori,”  said Lee Navarro, the technical coordinator for Phoenix Overdrive.

Victoria Enmon, a game-lover herself, was diagnosed with cancer. To honor Tori’s life, Extra Life was created to raise money for the hospital that treated Tori. From 2008 to 2009, Extra Life raised a little over $300,000 that went directly to help kids like Tori.

“Here at Phoenix Overdrive, which is the team here in the Mohawk Valley area, have been doing this since 2014,” said Navarro.

“Oddly enough, work for me is fundraising actually. Back home, I work for a hospital foundation. I have been a professional fundraiser for about 10 or 11 years at this point,” said Capri.

Capri says he loves being able to bring his fundraising strengths to this event.

“One of my missions this year has been to lead by example and show that phenomenal fundraising is possible. What I’m seeing this year with the rest of the team is people really stepping up to the challenge and believing in themselves that they can ask for more money, they can ask more people and fundraise more,” said Capri.

Being back in person this year helped the team reach its goal. They raised more than $20,000 by around 6 p.m. on Saturday night.

“In 2019, this room was packed, actually. We had a ton of people in. A huge reason why I wanted to make sure I was here this year is to just carry on the momentum or even rebuild the momentum that was lost in 2020,” said Capri.

As the they try to rebuild their team, Capri says they have more to look forward to in 2022.

“This is an experience that not too many people get, especially in our adult lives. We get to dedicate a weekend to raising money. The whole thing has kind of carried over one into the other. I jut really like seeing people discover their philanthropic spirit through extra life,” said Capri.

The unofficial results for the money Phoenix Overdrive raised this year is $22,123. The team was happy those who were able to could be together this year in person doing what they love for a good cause.
