Topline

The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol sent letters to 35 telecommunications, email and social media companies instructing them to preserve records on a wide array of figures involved in the Capitol riot and efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Key Facts

The letters were sent to phone companies including AT&T and Verizon Wireless; email companies including AOL and Proton Technologies; social media companies including Facebook and Twitter; and other tech giants like Amazon and Apple.

The letters ask the companies to preserve emails, messages, call logs and other records and data from Capitol riot defendants, those who organized or spoke at rallies ahead of the Jan. 6 attack and those involved in discussions to “challenge, delay or interfere” with the Electoral College certification or otherwise overturn the election.

That could apply not only to Trump allies like Reps. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) and Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.), who spoke at “Stop The Steal” rallies in the lead up to the attack, but a much larger group of lawmakers that supported electoral objections – like House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Minority Whip Steve Scalise.

The orders are the latest indication the panel is casting as wide a net as possible to investigate not only the attack, but the baseless election fraud claims and efforts to overturn election results believed to have fueled it.

Former President Donald Trump will no doubt be in the crosshairs as part of this latest order, as will his family members, advisers, aides and attorneys, as well as other prominent right-wing figures targeted in previous orders by the panel.

Key Background

Last week, the panel sent letters to eight federal agencies seeking records on everything from discussions about Trump’s mental health and invoking the 25th Amendment to Trump’s entreaties to agencies like the Department of Justice to support his attempts to overturn the election. The panel also sent letters to 15 social media companies seeking information on extremism and misinformation on their platforms and any steps they took to combat them.

Big Number

138. That’s the number of House Republicans who voted to decertify Pennsylvania’s electors when the chamber regrouped following the Jan. 6 attack, in addition to 7 Senate Republicans. That vote came after 126 House Republicans signed an amicus brief in December supporting a Trump-backed lawsuit asking the Supreme Court to overturn the presidential election results in four swing states that handed Biden the White House.

Crucial Quote

“As the Select Committee continues its work, we anticipate delivering to you document requests for more specific categories of information. Your immediate efforts to identify and preserve these documents is therefore essential,” Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), the chair of the committee, said in each letter sent out on Monday.
