Shirley Mae Rasberry was a popular Richmond seamstress, her family said.
“It didn’t matter it if was an elegant wedding gown, a prom dress or a dress that just needed a simple alteration, she was the go-to person to get it done,” the family wrote in her obituary.
“She worked tirelessly day and night in her sewing room creating works of beauty her clients as she listened to her favorite gospel station.”
Mrs. Rasberry died Monday, March 15, 2021. She was 80.
Family and friends celebrated her life Monday, March 29, at a service at March Funeral Home.
Born in Caroline County, Mrs. Rasberry moved to Richmond as a teenager and graduated from Armstrong High School.
She was an active member for 40 years of Fifth Street Baptist Church, where she served as a deacon and sang in the Gospel Creations and the Tabernacle Choir.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Delver Junior Woman’s Club, the Red Hatters Club and Unique’s Bowling Club.
Mrs. Rasberry was predeceased by her husband, Milton Rasberry Jr.
Survivors include her son, Milton Rasberry III; daughters, Bernadale R. Witherspoon; LaTasha Rasberry and Tanya R. Hill; brothers, Alfred Young, Julian Young and Sherman Young; sisters, Doris Y. Barnes and Linda Young; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
