Local Colleges Commemorate Class of 2020 Virtually - Spectrum News

After an uncertain final semester for the Class of 2020, local colleges held unique ways to celebrate their graduating seniors this weekend.

"I do feel like I graduated, the conferral and like hearing Kent Syverud tell us we're officially graduates, that felt as legit as can be right now, it felt good, felt exciting,” said Syracuse University graduate Alexandra Jennerjahn.

Sunday, SU held a virtual degree conferral ceremony.

It was a way to recognize the Class of 2020, but the school is hoping for an in-person ceremony at the Dome in the future, "I am really, fingers crossed, looking forward to getting back here in the fall. Just one more proper goodbye, seeing my friends again, being able to tell them goodbye,” said Jennerjahn.

Meanwhile, the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry held a virtual commencement ceremony Saturday.

"It was actually more fun then what I would have expected, I really enjoyed it, and appreciated the time and effort they put into it,” said graduate George Beinetti.

The online format gave the school a chance to get many involved in the ceremony. 

"Especially at the end with alumni, and staff, and faculty. I thought that was really cool and something special that they added that wouldn't have been part of the regular ceremony,” Beinetti said.

This weekend's ceremony’s also brought unique celebrations, from graduates and their families.

"My roommates and I, eating some Dinosaur BBQ, reminiscing. It's been a day full of talking about memories, which I think is healing and really good closure,” Jennerjahn said.

"We were able to have chips and salsa, drinks, and kick back, kind of sit on the couch, hang out, cheer, and jump. It was a whole different sort of process, and from that standpoint, it was fun,” said David Beinetti, George’s father.

SUNY ESF is also hoping to bring their graduates back at a later date for an opportunity to walk with the class.
