Shane Fitzgerald, executive editor of the Bucks County Courier Times and The Intelligencer and sub-regional editor for the former GateHouse Atlantic Region, will take on a broader role for the USA Today Network, serving as Gannett’s Pennsylvania editor.
In his expanded role, Fitzgerald will continue as executive editor at the two Bucks County news operations and have oversight of 12 other Pennsylvania news organizations. He also will continue as the site leader for the Burlington County Times, working closely with South New Jersey Executive Editor Audrey Harvin and the rest of the business, advertising, circulation and production leadership team at the suburban Philadelphia properties.
Fitzgerald, 56, joined the Courier Times, The Intelligencer and Burlington County Times in June 2015, after stints as executive editor at the Beaver County Times and the Corpus Christi Caller-Times in Texas. He has additional management experience at the Caller-Times and the Rocky Mountain News in Denver, dating to the mid-1990s. His newsrooms have won numerous enterprise, public service and investigative awards in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Texas and best newspaper designations 10 times in those three states.
Fitzgerald said each newsroom will continue to focus on local content but will work with staff throughout the USA Today Network’s Atlantic region for stories of a larger scale.
“I’m excited about working with such a talented group covering the whole state,’’ Fitzgerald said. “We have a chance to make a significant impact with such a network of terrific journalists working together. We stretch from Erie to Philadelphia and many points in between. We can provide context and tackle common issues on a big scale. It’s great opportunity to share expertise from each of these organizations to benefit all the newsrooms – and readers – in the state. We’ll be able to accomplish things together that we could never do as individual newsrooms.’’
Each news organization retains local leadership.
Joining Fitzgerald in leading the Pennsylvania organizations will be:
– Lisa Micco, Beaver County Times executive editor and West region news director
– Patrick O’Shea, Ellwood City Ledger editor and lead reporter.
– Matt Martin, Erie Times News executive editor. Martin also will serve as the Western Pennsylvania Region executive editor
– Brian Whipkey, (Somerset) Daily American executive editor and West region news director
– Randy Parker, York Daily Record. Parker will serve as the deputy state editor and Central Pennsylvania Region Executive Editor, including the Chambersburg Public Opinion, the Hanover Evening Sun and Lebanon Daily News.
– Pat Howard, Erie Times News and West region news director
– Susan Martin, York Daily Record and Central region news director
– Scott Fisher, York Daily Record, state capitol bureau chief and Central region news director
– Ashley Fontones, Pocono Record managing editor and East region news director
– Danielle Camilli, Bucks County Courier Times/Intelligencer and East region news director
– Ben Destefan, (Waynesboro) Record-Herald executive editor and lead reporter. Destefan also will continue to oversee the Greencastle Echo Pilot.
– Melissa Lee, (Honesdale) Tri-County Independent executive editor and lead reporter.
In addition to those local leaders, regional editors have been chosen for sports and life/culture content:
– Elizabeth Stallings, East and Central Pennsylvania sports editor. Stallings is based in York.
– Jeff Kirik, Western Pennsylvania sports editor. Kirik is based in Erie.
– Tammy Paolino, South Atlantic regional editor for life and culture. Paolino is based in Cherry Hill, N.J.
“This is a fantastic leadership team for our Pennsylvania markets,’’ said Hollis R. Towns, Atlantic Region vice president for news for Gannett and the USA Today Network. “They all understand the crucial role newsrooms play in their community. That role is amplified in difficult times such as what we are facing with the coronavirus pandemic. But these editors also understand their role as community watchdog. Fitzgerald will work with each local leadership team to enhance that role.”
Among one of Fitzgerald’s first moves will be to form a statewide Capitol bureau and investigative team, who will cover the Pennsylvania statehouse and statewide issues for the region and the USA Today network.
Fitzgerald lives in Lower Makefield, Pa., and has two children, Derek, 28, a civil engineer in San Francisco; and Ryan, 26, a business analyst for a major airline in Dallas.
Gannett is the nation’s largest newspaper media chain, with more than 260 daily titles in nearly all 50 states, plus USA Today. Gannett reaches more than 50 percent of the total U.S. digital audience and serves more than 300,000 business customers.
