Three local candidates, Kelly Jones, Shelley Funke Frommeyer and Nicole Broomall, attended and spoke at the Alexandria City Council meeting last week, with many of their supporters in tow.

The meeting saw the official appointment of David Plummer, who will be the new city administrator, but the council allowed the candidates to take the podium at the beginning of the meeting to speak about the issues they cared about.

Kelly Jones, who is running as a Democrat for state representative in Kentucky District 68, spoke first. District 68 covers much of Campbell County, including Alexandria, Cold Spring, Fort Thomas and parts of Highland Heights. Joseph Fischer, a Republican, is the district’s current representative, but he is not running for reelection. Jones’ opponent in the race is Republican candidate Mike Clines.

“So, I was invited here tonight to talk a little bit about what I can do for Alexandria,” she said.

Specifically, Jones spoke about her hopes to build out the city’s infrastructure and work to preserve the mixture of urban and rural environments in the city.

She also spoke about her hopes for legislation at the state level, particularly as it relates to education. She leveled criticism at charter schools in particular.

“If we look to other states right now, we see that once charter schools come in, they spread,” she said. “If you know anything about charter schools, you know that they can take public tax dollars away from our public schools. We also know that they don’t have to allow individual kiddos with disabilities in.”

Jones has a son with Down syndrome, so she said this last point was especially important to her.

She also spoke about her hopes to expand mental health care, support women in the workforce and institute either a free or reduced-price lunch program in schools.

Republican candidate Shelley Funke Frommeyer took the podium next. Frommeyer is running for Kentucky State Senate District 24 against Democratic candidate Rene Heinrich. District 24 includes Campbell, Bracken and Pendleton counties as well as parts of Covington.

“My campaign focuses on family, freedom and safety,” Frommeyer said.

Frommeyer lives in Alexandria, so she took a moment to compliment the Alexandria City Council’s recent decision to lower local property tax rates. She then talked about how she hoped to use her business experience to secure Alexandria’s interests in Frankfort.

Noting the current Republican majority in the Kentucky Senate, a majority that holds 29 of the 38 seats, she said that such a large majority would allow her to secure the interests of her district, including Alexandria, if elected.

“Please know that being in the majority will help us when it comes time for the budget,” Frommeyer said. “When Alexandria needs something in the budget, let me know. I will take your call.”

Finally, an unexpected speaker, one who was not officially invited, took the podium: Nicole Broomall, who is running for Campbell County School Board’s District 4, a seat currently occupied by Peggy Schultz.

“There is currently only one parent on the Board of Education,” Broomall said. She then added that she was “running as the only parent who currently has Campbell County students.”

Broomall spoke about her experience as a parent in the district and discussed how the pandemic had changed the lives of so many students and families.

“It’s just a different world,” she said. “I’ll have 16 more years as a parent in the district, and I take that responsibility seriously. And so, I look forward to the opportunity to represent Alexandria and represent parents.”

Members of the Campbell County Board of Education can be viewed at the board’s website.

The deadline to register to vote to participate in the general election is Tuesday, Oct. 11. Kentuckians can check their registration status online or use the Commonwealth’s online registration portal.
