ANN ARBOR, MI -- Even after 25 years in business, Avalon International Breads keeps health at its core.
Launched in 1997 in Detroit, the bakery was created with the goal of providing artisan bread in a food desert. It expanded its health-conscious efforts into Ann Arbor in 2016 with the opening of its café.
“We’ve always had healthy food in mind, with a brunch focus and, obviously, a bread focus,” said Joanne Bower, Avalon Café and Kitchen general manager.
Avalon Café and Kitchen features American breakfast with a focus on organic, local and healthy food as much as possible. Its Ann Arbor location also features a café with a rotating selection of seasonal drinks.
“We can’t do everything organic, but we try to do 50% organic in our restaurant,” Bower said.
Bread is made in-house using organic flour and is entirely vegan, with the exception of the challah, which uses an egg wash.
Brunch is the star at Avalon, with popular dishes including the eggs benedict, featuring house-made buttermilk biscuits and hollandaise sauce, and the Avalon hash, a mixture of rutabaga, Yukon gold and sweet potatoes, parsnips and a zesty chipotle sauce.
In addition to its organic ingredients, Avalon also tries to include lots of greens and salads in its dishes, which help boost the health of its menu, Bower said.
“You feel good after you leave,” she said. “You don’t feel like you need to take a nap,”
