HANOVERTON — United Local Schools will require staff and students in grades preschool through 12 to wear a face covering beginning Monday.
The school board approved the action at a special meeting Monday morning in an attempt to maintain all-day, in-person instruction. The district will also be installing classroom air purification systems, continuing extra cleaning of high-touch areas and “implementing other safety precautions including frequent hand washing and social distancing when possible.”
The issue will be re-evaluated every two weeks with input from the Columbiana County Health Department.
According to a notice issued by schools Superintendent Lance Hostetler and posted on the district’s website Friday, the district has been monitoring the Covid situation in the school community with the assistance of the health department. As of Thursday United Local Schools had been notified of 20 positive cases among staff and students, resulting in 140 students being placed on quarantine due to close contact and adding up to over 1,200 days of lost in-person instruction.
Hostetler said families should continue to monitor their children for Covid symptoms and that students and staff stay home if exhibiting any symptoms.
“We understand that these decisions may not be popular among all our families, but please understand that we are doing our best to keep students and staff in an in-person environment,” he said.
