Duffy: Celebrate local these holidays - DeKalb Daily Chronicle

soworos.blogspot.com

The 2020 holiday season is sure to be like no other. There will definitely need to be a balance between spreading the holiday cheer with family without spreading 2020’s Scrooge (the COVID-19 virus).

First, I want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! In a year when the focus is on the many challenges that we have had to face in 2020, we don’t want to forget to take the time to be thankful for all that we do have. I know that although this year has been a challenge, I have a long list of things to be thankful for and that won’t be overlooked.

Once we’ve finished our turkey, potatoes, dressing, desserts, etc., we’ll look ahead at a variety of activities still taking place in DeKalb. This Saturday is Small Business Saturday. Many local small businesses in our area will be open and welcome you to shop their stores safely. Take a break from the Black Friday specials and shop your local small business. This year more than ever the businesses that provide the identity of our community need your support.

Throughout the month of December, the Winter Bash 2020 Countdown will focus on local businesses to promote what they have to offer. Go to dekalb.org or follow the DeKalb Chamber on Facebook for the daily promotions. Be sure to watch for the offers, listen to them on 94.9 WDKB or check out the ads in the Daily Chronicle. Be sure to try shopping local first to help support those businesses that have helped in so many ways (donations, sponsorships, fundraising help, etc.) and need you to return that favor this holiday season. Visit dekalb.org for a list of local businesses you can support this holiday season. Support local. Shop local. Save local.

Santa is coming

The first week of December begins a safe celebration with Lights on Lincoln & Santa Comes Thru Town at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 4. Check out the route at DeKalb.org and be sure to wear your mask and practice social distancing throughout the route to welcome Santa to town. Santa will finish up to light the big tree in Van Buer Plaza to officially kick off the season.

Because the traditional visits with Santa cannot take place, you can still get your lists to him by submitting your letters to Santa in-person at local retailers, online at DeKalb.org, or submit a video by messaging the Chamber through Facebook. Santa will be reading letters from local boys and girls via the DeKalb Chamber’s Facebook page so be sure to watch for details.

DeKalb Chamber’s State of the City

Join us at 9 p.m. Dec. 3, for a virtual presentation about the status of current activities and plans going forward for the City of DeKalb. The speakers will be DeKalb Mayor Jerry Smith and Northern Illinois University President Lisa Freeman. Questions can be submitted during the event or in advance at matt.duffy@dekalb.org. Registration is free for all but required to attend the live presentation.

• Matt Duffy is executive director of the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce.
