Every holiday season, we hear about the importance of shopping local.

This year, however, shopping Treasure Valley businesses is vital to the survival of those impacted by COVID-19.

According to a report from the US Chamber of commerce, more than 70% of small businesses are concerned about financial hardship due to prolonged closure and more than half (58%) worry about having to permanently close.

Before shopping for your loved ones on Amazon Prime’s two day, free delivery – as easy and convenient as it can be – consider shopping local – consider supporting your local businesses who need it now, more than ever.

With the changes that came with COVID-19, many small businesses are adapting and offering many different ways to enjoy their products and services without requiring you to go in.

“The difference between a big box store and local businesses is that you can get in contact with a person who cares and wants to help you find what you need, they can make your experience personal,” Downtown Boise Association’s Jennifer Hensley said.

Find out how businesses have adapted and are accommodating customers by going on their websites or calling.

Here are a few other ways to shop local this holiday season:

Small Business Weekend

Every year after Black Friday, the Downtown Boise association hosts Small Business Saturday. This year, it’s a full weekend.

Starting Friday evening, November 27th through Sunday, November 29th, businesses in downtown Boise will have special deals and events.

“Small Business Weekend is an incredible opportunity to explore all that downtown has to offer, but at this time especially – to remind ourselves why this place we call home is so wonderful,” Hensley said.

More than 60 businesses are participating and offering deals on everything from home goods to clothing to food.

To participate, first print or download a shopping passport. If you go to the store, they’ll give you a stamp. There is also a way to participate virtually.

Buy Idaho Holiday Market

Buy Idaho and the Capital City Public Market are hosting a holiday market where more than 90 local venders will be selling locally made goods and products.

The market is will be open on Saturday, November 28th from 10am – 3pm at the 34th Street Market location.

Drinks and live music will also be available. According to the Buy Idaho website, COVID-19 safety precautions will be enforced.

In addition, many grocery stores will label products that are made locally. This is a great way to shop and support local food suppliers.

At a time when many are uncertain and feeling powerless, there are many ways to help small businesses survive and stay afloat this holiday season.
