SAGINAW, MI -- Fuzzy’s owner Elaine Tambouridis has been serving Saginaw for as long as she can remember. Now that patrons are again dining in, she’s beginning to feel more at-home again in the restaurant she’s managed for 20 years.
Her parents, John and Eva Zestos, have owned and operated restaurants in Saginaw since the 1950s. While they have five children, Tambouridis said she was the only one to express interest in owning her own restaurant. So, in 2000, the Zestos bought Fuzzy’s, and Tambouridis has run it ever since.
“It used to be a dairy store before they bought it,” Tambouridis said. “We have regulars come in weekly, and they really helped us during this whole pandemic.”
Like many other restaurants, Fuzzy’s was shut down for much of the pandemic and relied on takeout orders. Fuzzy’s received local grants to help stay open, and Tambouridis added that many local hospitals also helped the business by placing large takeout orders.
“Saginaw’s been very supportive with grants and keeping me afloat,” Tambouridis said. “Without them, I couldn’t have done it.”
Now, Fuzzy’s black-and-white checkered floors and diner seating are again available for longtime patrons. Tambouridis said their 32 flavors of Mooney’s ice cream has been popular, especially as the summer heats up, but other crowd favorites include their hamburgers and pies.
While Tambouridis said Fuzzy’s folded sandwiches and rice pudding are her go-to orders, their soups and homemade cinnamon bread are also fan favorites. In fact, former President Joe Biden took some cinnamon bread to-go when he visited Fuzzy’s in 2010 while touring the Great Lakes Bay Region.
“I felt honored. It was a great experience,” Tambouridis said. “They told me a week before that he was visiting, but I couldn’t advertise them. We tried to keep it quiet.”
Although Tambouridis enjoyed the visit from Biden, she said she’s glad that Fuzzy’s can again open its doors to its regulars, who she considers family. Since reopening at half capacity, Tambouridis said many regulars have returned to the diner, making things feel a bit more normal to her.
“We have many, many returning customers,” Tambouridis said. “I love the interaction the customers that my employees know. It’s like we’re a big family.”
Fuzzy’s, 1924 Court St., is open Tuesday-Sunday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. For their menu, see the website online, the phone number is (989) 790-1719.
