Indiana Sired Fair Circuit harness racing last week took place at two venues: the Shelby County fairgrounds in Shelbyville, on Monday and Tuesday, and the Jay County fairgrounds in Portland, Ind., on Saturday. Some local horses raced in Shelbyville but then did not go to Portland because of the short time between races.
The two wins for the week recorded by horses with local connections were both by 2-year-old colts. The pacing colt Ultimaroca won at Shelbyville for the Charlie Conrad stable, and the trotting colt Pilgrim’s Image won at Portland for the Simon Girod stable of Salem.
Other paychecks at Shelbyville for the Conrad barn were had by both pacing and trotting 2-year-olds: Topville Celebrity was third in her race; Onoitsmymothernlaw was fourth in his race; Jack Wacker was fifth in his race; and Amigo Style was fourth in his race. Other Conrad freshman colts and fillies not sharing in the purse money, with sixth-place finishes, were Catholic Girl and Mt. Swanmore.
Conrad’s 3-year-olds who garnered winnings at Shelbyville included Boom Pow, who was third in his trotting race, Moscato, who was fourth in her pace, and Bludhaven, who was fifth in the pacing finale of the day on Tuesday.
Other local horses racing at Shelbyville were the John Spotten freshman trotter Aslar, who finished sixth; JL Dance With Me from the Simon Girod stable, who was fifth in her race; Hayswood Linda, who was third and just ahead of Moscato in their race for pacing fillies; and Hayswood Pacifica, who was also third in her race. Hayswood Linda and Hayswood Pacifica are owned by Hayswood Farm of Corydon.
At Portland, Aslar and Boom Pow were in the same heat for freshman trotting colts; Boom Pow finished second and Aslar sixth. Pilgrim’s Image trotted the fastest mile of the day — and perhaps the entire summer season so far — for freshman colts when he stopped the clock in 2:03:0. Topville Celebrity was fifth in her race, and JL Dance With Me garnered a second-place check in her heat. Hayswood Pacifica and Hayswood Linda were both fifth in their races. Hayswood Linda’s mile was run in 1:59:4. It not often that a county fairgrounds track in Indiana sees the top five fillies in a race all under two minutes.
It seemed like Lanesville Week at pari-mutuel tracks as the only local horses racing at Hawthorne in Chicago, Running Aces in Minneapolis and Hoosier Park in Anderson had connections to Alvin Walther. On Sunday, the 2-year-old filly Brandon’s Rose was third in her race at Hawthorne over a muddy track. That night, the aged pacer To the Limit was fifth in his race at Running Aces. On Wednesday, the filly Soul Kitchen was sixth in her race at Hoosier Park. All three of these horses were born and raised on the Walther farm south of Lanesville. Not a Lanesville native but owned in part by Walther, the 3-year-old pacing colt Cruisin Virgin was eighth in his race on Thursday at Hoosier Park.
ISFC racing action takes a break this week, for what would have been the Indiana State Fair, but will resume Wednesday, Aug. 19, in Corydon with a full slate of races scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Admission to the grandstand that day is free, and spectators are welcome to visit with horses, trainers and drivers among the trailers parked around the Harrison County Fairgrounds.
